Estradiol is a key type of estrogen (female sex hormone) produced by the ovaries. However, during pregnancy, the placenta also produces estradiol. This test is recommended for females to assess reproductive health, menstrual cycle, fertility, and other factors. Increased levels may be indicative of pregnancy, gynecomastia, or ovarian tumors. Levels are also high during the assisted reproduction stage where ovulation is induced and low during the early follicular phase.
